Under general direction, is responsible for performing a full range of systems administration activities for large and/or complex operating systems that include planning, system and hardware design, configuration, implementation, and management of enterprise server systems; performs related duties as required.
Duties
Examples of Work (Any one position may not include all the duties listed nor do the examples cover all the duties that may be performed):
- Designs, modifies, configures, installs, and maintains complex operating systems software and hardware such as those associated with physical or virtual servers, enterprise storage solutions (e.g.Veritas NetBackup), or domain controller servers (e.g. Active Directory);
- Researches, evaluates, and recommends hardware and software infrastructure systems and/or components to meet technical requirements and enhance operating systems; coordinates testing and implementation of new hardware and software;
- Analyzes, diagnoses, and provides technical expertise for complex problems related to infrastructure operating systems and/or enterprise storage solutions; proposes, initiates, and implements appropriate solutions;
- Performs data and access protection processes, security and administration functions, and performance monitoring;
- Manages the activities of systems administration personnel responsible for various operating systems; assigns personnel to various tasks and projects, directs their activities, provides coaching and training to increase technical knowledge, and evaluates their work;
- Assists in developing standards, policies, and procedures for systems administration; assists in developing operating budget;
- Writes and/or reviews system documentation, program specifications, production procedures, and other documentation that may include user manuals and instructions; maintains accurate documentation and administrative information for infrastructure operating systems;
- Develops plans and specifications for growth of systems; ensures long-term requirements of systems operations and administration are included in the overall information systems planning of the organization;
- Works with Information Technology security personnel to develop policies and procedures to increase and/or enhance operating systems security;
- Participates in District-wide information technology projects; participates in professional activities to remain knowledgeable regarding developments in the field of systems administration.
Minimum Required Qualifications
Possession of a bachelor's degree and four (4) years of experience in computer applications, systems administration, or systems analysis. Substitution(s): Possession of valid certification as a Citrix Certified Associate - Virtualization, VMWare Certified Associate - Data Center Virtualization, Microsoft Certified Solutions Associate (MCSA): Windows Server, or comparable certification may substitute for two (2) years of the education requirement. Additional experience as specified above may substitute for the educational requirements on a year-for-year basis (one (1) year of experience is equal to thirty (30) semester hours or forty-five (45) quarter hours).
Department Preferred Qualifications
- Prefer candidate has experience with Cloud Platforms (Azure/AWS): Expertise with managing and deploying cloud infrastructure on platforms such as Azure and AWS, including setting up virtual machines, storage solutions, and networking configurations.
- Prefer candidate has experience with Data and Security Analytics Platforms: Knowledge of data and security analytics platforms to monitor, analyze, and respond to security incidents and data trends.
- Prefer candidate has experience with MS O365 Administration: Expertise in administering Microsoft Office 365, including user management, license allocation, and troubleshooting issues related to email, SharePoint, and Teams.
- Prefer candidate has experience with EDR Tool Deployments, Configurations, and Maintenance: Experience in deploying, configuring, and maintaining Endpoint Detection and Response (EDR) tools to enhance security posture and detect threats.
- Prefer candidate has experience with strong knowledge of Linux and Windows OS: In-depth understanding of both Linux and Windows operating systems, including installation, configuration, and troubleshooting.
- Prefer candidate has experience with Microsoft Autopilot Implementation and support: Knowledge and experience with implementing Microsoft Autopilot for device provisioning and management, ensuring a streamlined deployment process.
- Prefer candidate has experience with Microsoft Intune Implementation and Policy Creation: Proficiency in implementing Microsoft Intune for mobile device management (MDM) and creating policies to enforce security and compliance.
- Prefer candidate has experience with API Integrations: Ability to integrate various systems and applications using APIs to improve operational efficiencies and automate processes.
- Prefer candidate has experience with Infrastructure Management (Servers and Storage): Experience in designing, maintaining, and ongoing support of physical and virtual servers, as well as storage solutions, to ensure high availability and performance.
- Prefer candidate has experience with Cross-Functional Team Collaboration: Experience working effectively with cross-functional teams in a large environment, coordinating efforts and ensuring alignment with organizational goals.
- Prefer candidate has experience with Designing, Implementing, and Patching Windows Desktop and Server Environments: Experience in designing, implementing, and maintaining Windows desktop and server environments, including applying patches and updates.
- Prefer candidate has experience with Infrastructure Monitoring Tools: Experience with implementing and enhancing infrastructure monitoring tools to track system performance and identify potential issues.
- Prefer candidate has experience with Compliance and Auditing of IT Systems and Processes: Understanding of compliance standards and auditing processes to ensure IT systems and processes meet regulatory requirements.
- Prefer candidate has experience with Backup and Recovery, DR Planning, and Security Protocols: Experience implementing and ongoing support of backup and recovery solutions, security protocols to protect data and systems, and disaster recovery planning.
Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities
Thorough knowledge of computer operating systems and related hardware and software; thorough knowledge of scripting, TCP/IP networking, Ethernet technologies, thorough knowledge of systems administration practices such as system setups, account management, backup/restore, security, and applications and peripheral installations; considerable knowledge of networking principles and practices associated with local area networks; considerable knowledge of documentation and report writing procedures; general knowledge of data base principles; general knowledge of programming capabilities and limitations; ability to plan and integrate information delivery systems with organizational objectives; ability to evaluate the capabilities of operating systems hardware and software; ability to perform system analysis and design, ability to diagnose and resolve problems with operating systems; ability to manage the time of others; ability to plan and coordinate the work of others; ability to develop priorities and work sequences; ability to convey complex technical knowledge while coaching junior staff members; ability to communicate technical concepts and solutions to non-technical personnel; ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with associates, District officials, and computer vendors.
