Job Summary
UETN provides network and IT Solutions for Educational institutions (Higher Education, K12, Libraries, and other entities (Zoo, Aquarium,..) throughout Utah. This position is integral in providing systems and services to all UETN Stakeholders.. We are looking for a Senior System Engineer. You’ll be joining a team that is responsible for managing storage, server and virtual hosting infrastructures. Senior System Engineer responsibilities include monitoring system performance and configuring new software and hardware. To be successful in this role, you should have excellent troubleshooting skills and hands-on experience with various operating systems. Senior System Engineer has on-call remote technical work on a rotating basis and this is an essential function of this position. Senior System Engineer attends team meetings and communicates (verbally and in writing) programming and system issues to appropriate staff and customers. Presents findings, recommendations, and specifications both verbally and in writing. Provides time and resource estimates to managers for new projects as well as problem resolution. Tests applications and analyzes program output and error logs. Designs and implements environments in support of mission-critical applications required to be highly available. Continuously looks for system weaknesses and ways to improve on that which is currently implemented. Participates in virtual teams for troubleshooting efforts that involve diverse departmental groups.
Responsibilities
Job Responsibilities: Manages, supports, monitors, and troubleshoots department UNIX systems and environments. Performs routine and complex system maintenance tasks, including hardware and software upgrades, system recovery, and performance tuning. Creates and maintains development and production environments for specialized systems. Provides tools and support for department staff. Installs system and application hardware and software. Primary System Administrator for UEN’s State-wide DNS Anycast system(InfoBlox). Administer Systems Patching automation. Enterprise Firewall administration maintains a secure rule base. Assists in the analysis and purchase decisions of vendor products. Works with Hardware and Software manufacturers and vendors to maintain and troubleshoot, patch, and fix system issues. Monitors system performance; and troubleshoots hardware and software errors. Investigate and provide information to technical and project leads about operating system and utility features and limitations. Designs and codes scripts. Follows industry recommendations and department programming standards to ensure code efficiency. Troubleshoots and repairs existing scripts and provides input on code fixes and alternative solutions. Adequately documents and maintains change management control of all scripts written.
Minimum Qualifications
Requires a bachelor’s degree in area of specialty, or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience); and 4-6 years of experience in the field or in a related area. Department-specific requirements: Must be a self-starter and be able to perform under minimal supervision. Experience administering DNS systems. Demonstrated experience with load balancing concepts and systems. Thorough understanding of web application servers and architecture. Ability to troubleshoot and problem solve using skills, experience and research.
