Description
A Java/Websphere engineer is required to join the Web Engineering team , which engineers, integrates and hosts Java/Linux-based web infrastructure on which thousands of web applications delivered to both internal and external clients run. In short, this is not an operational role and we are not looking for a Websphere administrator. We are looking for an engineer to provide assistance to developers implementing apps on top of WAS, and as such must possess experience in Java development to allow them to perform this role. In addition the candidate must have an understanding of Java infrastructure and strong fundamentals (for example Linux O/S concepts and commands, TCP/IP, HTTP) in order to successfully perform this role. More specifically, responsibilities will include:
Advanced investigation and resolution of all application and WAS environment issues, including troubleshooting at the code execution and O/S level
Working with development teams to recommend solutions to improve performance / stability in their code.
Contribute to an architecture definition for WAS deployments to meet the firm’s objectives for standardizing WAS infrastructure
Implement automation tools within our proprietary config management framework (Perl, Jython, nosql config store) to enable safe, robust self-service management of Websphere infrastructure
Configure and utilize Java Application Performance Monitoring products for troubleshooting, reporting, capacity planning and trending.
Skills Required
Experience developing in Java, ideally web-based applications
Knowledge of Java infrastructure (ie. internals of the JVM, garbage collection, classloaders etc…)
Solid Linux/Unix conceptual and working knowledge
Knowledge of TCP/IP, HTTP, SSL protocols
Websphere system management and architecture experience
Troubleshooting of WAS V6.1, V7.0 environments and applications (analyze JVM logs, Trace Logs, FFDC, native logs, java core, heap dumps)
Skills Desired
Understanding of Websphere command line scripting interface and Jython language.
Scripting using Perl or Python
Experience working in DMZ environments with good understanding of TCP/IP, hardware load-balancing (ideally F5 BigIP?), firewalls, multi-tiered architectures.
Experience with configuration and use of Java Application Performance Monitoring tools.
