The Opportunity
DAT is looking for a Director of Software Engineering to join our team working hybrid in Denver, Colorado.
Candidate profile
As the Director of Engineering, you will lead and inspire five product-focused engineering teams responsible for delivering high-quality, scalable, and impactful solutions for our freight brokers. You will work closely with product management, design, and other cross-functional partners to align technical initiatives with business goals and drive the roadmap forward. This role will provide strategic and tactical guidance, ensuring that teams are empowered, efficient, and driving results for our customers.
What You’ll Do
Team Leadership & Development
- Lead, mentor, and support a talented group of engineering managers and individual contributors across five teams.
- Foster a culture of continuous learning, innovation, and improvement to promote the professional growth of team members.
- Collaborate with engineering managers to set team goals, conduct performance reviews, and identify skill gaps.
Strategic & Technical Vision
- Partner closely with product management, design, and other stakeholders to develop and implement engineering strategies aligned with business objectives.
- Contribute to the technical roadmap, ensuring scalability, reliability, and high-performance standards.
- Advocate for best engineering practices, including code quality, testing, monitoring, and CI/CD.
Project & Resource Management
- Prioritize and allocate resources effectively across projects, balancing team capacity and business needs.
- Ensure project deadlines and milestones are met by implementing efficient project management processes and removing roadblocks.
- Drive operational excellence through process improvements, KPI tracking, and data-driven decision-making.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Build strong relationships with cross-functional leaders and promote collaboration between engineering, product, design, and other departments.
- Act as an engineering representative in executive meetings to advocate for technical initiatives and resource needs.
- Align engineering objectives with overall company goals, adapting to changing priorities and market needs.
Innovation & Problem-Solving
- Drive a culture of innovation by encouraging teams to explore new technologies and solve complex problems creatively.
- Champion technical initiatives that enhance product functionality and the user experience.
- Promote experimentation and iterative development, ensuring teams are focused on delivering value quickly.
The Skills and Experience You’ll Bring
- Experience: 10+ years in software engineering with 5+ years in a leadership role, ideally managing multiple product-facing teams.
- Technical Expertise: Strong background in web and middle tier technologies (node.js, java, graphql, react), software development, and modern engineering practices.
- Leadership Skills: Proven experience in developing high-performing teams, fostering inclusive culture, and promoting a growth mindset.
- Project Management: Skilled in agile methodologies, resource allocation, and balancing long-term and short-term business priorities.
- Collaboration: Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with a track record of successfully collaborating across departments.
- Education: Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.

For Colorado-based candidates, in compliance with Colorado's Equal Pay for Equal Work Act, the minimum salary for this role is $200,000.00 + benefits. The maximum compensation for this role can vary significantly depending on your job-related skills and experience.
