The Head of Defense is responsible for directly driving business development, sales, and program execution within the defense sector. This hands-on role involves identifying and pursuing new defense-related opportunities, cultivating relationships with key government and military stakeholders, and ensuring program success from inception through delivery. The ideal candidate will have deep experience working directly with customers and partners, a strong grasp of regulatory and compliance frameworks, and the ability to implement effective defense strategies and technologies. While the position includes strategic planning and operational oversight, it emphasizes personal engagement in sales efforts, contract negotiations, and day-to-day execution rather than high-level leadership or managerial tasks.
Key Responsibilities:
Business Development & Sales:
- Identify, pursue, and secure new defense contracts, leveraging a deep understanding of industry requirements and customer needs.
- Negotiate terms, pricing, and delivery schedules with clients, suppliers, and government agencies.
- Establish and maintain strong relationships with military organizations, defense contractors, and security stakeholders to drive revenue and program expansion.
Program Execution & Operational Management:
- Directly manage key defense programs from proposal through final delivery, ensuring timelines, budgets, and quality standards are met.
- Develop detailed project plans, operational processes, and technical documentation to support program objectives.
- Coordinate with cross-functional partners and external vendors to ensure efficient resource allocation and operational readiness.
Defense Strategy & Technology Implementation:
- Stay current with evolving defense technologies, cybersecurity measures, and regulatory environments, and apply this knowledge to enhance program effectiveness.
- Conduct regular risk assessments and implement mitigation strategies to protect sensitive information and operations.
- Integrate cutting-edge defense tools, software, and best practices to maintain competitiveness and compliance with industry standards.
Compliance & Governance:
- Ensure all activities adhere to domestic and international defense regulations, export controls, and relevant security protocols.
- Update and refine internal policies to align with evolving defense compliance requirements and standards.
Required Skills and Qualifications:
- Significant hands-on experience in business development, sales, and direct program management within the defense sector.
- At least 10 years of experience in defense operations or related fields, with substantial involvement in customer-facing roles.
- Proven track record of winning defense contracts and delivering complex programs on time and within budget.
- Strong knowledge of defense regulations, cybersecurity practices, and international compliance requirements.
- Excellent communication, negotiation, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work independently and handle sensitive information with the highest level of integrity.
