Role Summary
This Sr. Counsel role will be part of the Intellectual Property team helping to protect company innovations and build a patent portfolio across a variety of electric vehicle-related technologies, including computer hardware and software, self-driving hardware and software, and vehicle mechanical systems, interiors and bodies. Responsibilities will include the following (other duties/activities may be assigned as needed):
Responsibilities
- Identifying and harvesting patentable inventions, participating in deciding patentability of inventions under review, and managing the preparation and prosecution of U.S. and foreign patent applications to review, revise, and align patent applications with business and product development direction and goals.
- Negotiating, drafting and revising intellectual property agreements including in-licensing, out-licensing, non-disclosure, and engineering, design and development agreements, and intellectual property terms in various commercial agreements.
- Working with engineering and business organizations and preparing and presenting training materials to provide legal advice and align intellectual property strategy with business goals in areas such as open source software, trade secret protection, artificial intelligence, and cybersecurity.
- Performing intellectual property due diligence to support strategic transactions.
- Developing and providing intellectual property risk assessment and mitigation strategies to business stakeholders for incoming licensing assertions by performing prior art searches, assessing patent validity and infringement, and preparing opinions and response strategies.
- Assisting with intellectual property enforcement and dispute matters including patent and trade secret litigation, and administrative patent challenges at the USPTO.
Qualifications
- Degrees: JD and B.S. Computer Engineering/Electrical Engineering
- Bar: California Bar Preferred; USPTO registration required.
- Experience: 5-8 Years of Law Firm and In-House Experience (OEM In-House Preferred)
- Experience in preparing and prosecuting patent applications in autonomous driving, vehicle software, advanced driver assistance, and artificial intelligence vehicle technologies.
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy and effective verbal and written communication skill are required
- Be highly motivated with the ability to work independently, to take initiative to address problems, and to make continuous process improvements.
- Strong ability to work effectively in a team environment and the ability to install confidence in clients and peers; excellent interpersonal skills.
Pay Disclosure
Salary Range for Palo Alto, CA based applicants: $186,000 - $232,000 annually (Actual compensation will be determined based on experience, location and other factors permitted by law).
