As a Senior Software Engineer at Maxar, you will play a pivotal role in developing and maintaining high-performance software applications critical to mission success in special operations environments. This role offers a dynamic, fast-paced setting, requiring creativity and technical expertise to deliver innovative solutions that operate at mission speed.
The team you will join is responsible for managing and evolving a massive on-premise, high-performance computing (HPC) infrastructure, processing and re-processing petabytes of data to meet national security needs. This is a hands-on, high-impact position where technical challenges abound, and collaboration with a diverse group of engineers, government leaders, and analysts is essential.
You will be expected to quickly learn and troubleshoot the complex computing environment while solving mission-critical technical problems daily. If you thrive under pressure, are a proactive problem-solver, and have experience in large-scale systems design and engineering, this is the role for you.
Who We Are:
We are a close-knit, collaborative team that thrives on solving complex, mission-critical technical problems. Our diverse group is committed to using advanced technologies for the greater good, supporting analysts and operators in the field with tools that deliver timely, actionable insights. Our cloud infrastructure is self-managed, built to support massive data volumes (over 10 petabytes) and our team’s rapid delivery approach—prototyping and iterating on solutions to meet urgent, real-world mission needs.
Key Responsibilities:
- Technical Leadership & Problem-Solving: Apply your expertise in backend programming languages (Python, Java, or C#) to design and implement robust solutions. You will troubleshoot and resolve technical issues, often under tight deadlines, ensuring the reliability of the system.
- High-Performance Computing Environment: Lead the effort to support and optimize the team’s HPC environment, managing petabytes of data, thousands of indices, and complex sharding in distributed systems. You will be responsible for resolving problems with high-scale databases and indices, and understanding and optimizing the system at a deep technical level.
- Data Engineering: Lead initiatives involving big data technologies such as Spark, DeltaLake, and HDFS to handle large-scale data processing and analytics. You will ensure that data processing happens quickly and efficiently, supporting real-time mission objectives.
- Collaboration & Mission Support: Work in close partnership with government task leaders, analysts, and engineers to ensure technical solutions align with mission needs. Your contributions will directly impact national security missions, providing solutions that enable real-time, mission-critical decision-making.
- Agile Development & Continuous Improvement: Utilize agile development methodologies to deliver iterative, high-quality solutions. You will prototype solutions rapidly, respond to feedback, and continuously improve system performance based on real-world usage.
What We’re Looking For:
- Expert Problem-Solver: You’re someone who thrives on solving hard problems with creative, technical solutions. Whether it’s diagnosing complex system failures or optimizing data workflows, you work tirelessly to identify and implement solutions.
- Hands-on Expertise in System Design: You bring a deep understanding of system design, particularly in complex, distributed environments. You can explain intricate system details in a way that others on the team can learn from, ensuring technical knowledge is shared across the group.
- Strong Collaboration Skills: You are not only technically strong but also a team player who can work well with others across different roles (engineers, analysts, government stakeholders). You’ll share your insights and learn from others in a collaborative, mission-driven environment.
- Resilience in High-Pressure Situations: Given the mission-critical nature of the work, you will be comfortable troubleshooting and resolving issues quickly and efficiently under tight deadlines.
Qualifications:
- Active TS/SCI clearance (with the ability to obtain a CI polygraph).
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Science, or a related field.
- 5+ years of professional software development experience with hands-on expertise in backend technologies such as Python, Java, or C#, and frontend frameworks (React, Angular) and web frameworks (Django, FastAPI).
- Solid experience with big data technologies such as Spark, DeltaLake, and HDFS, and database management.
- Proven experience with cloud infrastructure management, automation tools (Docker, Ansible), and DevOps practices.
- Experience with troubleshooting high-scale distributed systems, especially databases and large indices.
- A proven ability to deliver software solutions quickly in an agile development environment.
