As a Lead Software Engineer at JPMorgan Chase within Open Source Governance in Engineering Platforms and Experience you are a foundational member of a team responsible for leading the design and build of the tools and platforms our developers and wider teams use to consume and contribute to open source. You will be passionate about creating world-class developer experiences for your fellow developers
Job responsibilities
- Builds the tools and platforms that fellow developers will use to evaluate and select open source packages on which to build and use as dependencies; consume open source and incorporate into projects; and contribute patches and features back to the open source projects we use at the firm.
- Executes creative software solutions, design, development, and technical troubleshooting with ability to think beyond routine or conventional approaches to build solutions or break down technical problems
- Develops secure high-quality production code, and reviews and debugs code written by others
- Leads the development of our reporting, analytics, open source metadata, and outbound contribution tools.
- Identifies opportunities to eliminate or automate remediation of recurring issues to improve overall operational stability of software applications and systems
- Leads evaluation sessions with external vendors, startups, and internal teams to drive outcomes-oriented probing of architectural designs, technical credentials, and applicability for use within existing systems and information architecture.
- Leads communities of practice across Software Engineering to drive awareness and use of new and leading-edge technologies related to open source and tools use in the consumption and contribution
- Adds to team culture of diversity, equity, inclusion, and respect
Required qualifications, capabilities, and skills
- Formal training or certification on software and/or engineering concepts and 5+ years applied experience
- Advanced in one or more programming language: Strong Python and/or Java a must; preferably both
- Demonstrated proficiency in open source concepts and associated practices, both given we will use an “open source first” approach towards building the tools and platforms in Open Source Governance, but also because the products we build are to help our developers use and contribute to open source.
- Advanced knowledge of git, and associated platforms like GitHub, inside and out.
- Advanced understanding of agile methodologies such as CI/CD, Application Resiliency, and Security
- Hands-on practical experience delivering system design, application development, testing, and operational stability
- Experience in data engineering concepts as we are processing various datasets in order to develop insights and make decisions about the open source we use and to which we contribute
Preferred qualifications, capabilities, and skills
- Date visualizations – we provide a way for our leadership and developers to infer meaning and gather actionable intelligence about our open source consumption, our foundation sponsorships investments, our contributions to open source, the external contributions being made to our open source projects, and the open source ecosystem overall
- Comfortable working with customers (in this case our developers) to understand their needs, especially around developer ergonomics
- Python libraries like Jupyter, pandas, numpy, and Pydantic; ; Comfortable with functional programming and appreciate the value of type systems
- Familiarity with microservices architectures
- Comfortable working with and around AI/ML; great if you understand some of the topics at the intersection of GenAI and open source
- In-depth knowledge of the financial services industry and their IT systems
- Involved in open source communities and/or contributing to open source
