Volunteer to Hire: Chief Technology Officer (CTO) - Baltimore, MD
FOCUS on Communities United for Success (FOCUS), a Baltimore City-based 501(c)(3) non-profit dedicated to empowering underserved young adults through IT workforce development, is seeking a passionate and experienced volunteer to serve as our Chief Technology Officer (CTO) for a 3-to-6-month commitment, with the expectation that this role will transition into a paid position. Candidates residing in DC, Maryland, or northern Virginia are strongly preferred.

About the Role:
The Volunteer CTO will play a pivotal role in leading FOCUS's technology strategy and infrastructure. As we embark on an exciting new initiative to innovate our training programs using Mixed Reality (MR) and Artificial Intelligence (AI), the CTO will spearhead this effort in collaboration with our newly minted partner, Towson State University. This is an unparalleled opportunity to drive cutting-edge technological advancements in workforce development, with a flexible time commitment of approximately 20 hours per month.
Key Responsibilities:
- Strategic Leadership: Develop and implement a forward-thinking IT strategy that aligns with FOCUS's mission, long-term goals, and innovative initiatives in MR and AI.
- Technology Innovation: Lead the integration of Mixed Reality and AI into our training programs, enhancing the learning experience for participants and positioning FOCUS at the forefront of workforce development technology.
- Business Development: Drive business development efforts, including responding to Federal, State, and Local IT RFPs to secure funding and partnerships that support FOCUS's mission.
- Infrastructure Oversight: Oversee the selection, implementation, and maintenance of technology solutions to support program delivery, administrative operations, and communication.
- Security Management: Ensure the security and integrity of FOCUS's IT infrastructure and data, maintaining best practices in cybersecurity and data protection.
- Team Building: Build and manage a strong IT team, including the hiring of tech recruiters, to support FOCUS's growth and technological initiatives.
- Student Career Support: Collaborate with FOCUS's training and mentorship teams to help students find jobs and get hired in the IT field, leveraging industry connections and partnerships.
- Collaborative Innovation: Work closely with the Executive Director, program staff, and Towson State University to identify and address technology needs and opportunities for innovation.
- Documentation & Policy Development: Develop and maintain documentation for IT policies, procedures, and innovative training technologies.
Qualifications:
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in a senior IT leadership role, preferably in a non-profit or social impact organization.
- Strong understanding of IT infrastructure, cybersecurity, and data security best practices.
- Experience with project management, budgeting, and resource allocation.
- Familiarity or experience with Mixed Reality, AI, and their applications in education or workforce development is a plus.
- Experience in business development and responding to IT RFPs at Federal, State, or Local levels is preferred.
- Excellent communication, collaboration, and problem-solving skills.
- Passion for FOCUS's mission and a commitment to serving the community.
- Residing in DC, Maryland, or northern Virginia is preferred.
