SUMMARY:
The United States Department of Transportation (DOT) is seeking a visionary leader to serve as the Associate Chief Information Officer (ACIO) for Innovation and Emerging Technology / Chief Artificial Intelligence Officer (CAIO). Reporting to the Deputy Chief Information Officer, this role focuses on ensuring the responsible application of AI while leading initiatives that harness its power and that of emerging technologies. The ACIO/CAIO will manage risks, promote innovation, and position the Department at the forefront of technological advancements, all in support of enhancing the safety, efficiency, and modernization of the Nation's transportation systems.
WHAT YOU'LL DO:
- Lead AI Governance and Strategy: Build a collaborative governance environment to ensure the Department’s use of AI aligns with Executive Branch principles, fostering innovation while managing risks.
- Advise on Emerging Technology: Provide expert guidance on the implementation and oversight of AI and emerging technologies, ensuring they align with the Department’s strategic objectives.
- Support Mission-Critical Initiatives: Enable responsible and trustworthy application of AI and emerging technologies across the Department, contributing to the modernization and safety of the nation’s transportation systems.
- Drive Collaboration and Innovation: Leverage interpersonal skills to unite stakeholders, develop unified strategies, and advance the Department’s use of cutting-edge technology.
- Promote Data-Driven Decision-Making: Lead initiatives that integrate AI solutions, ensuring they are effective, ethical, and aligned with public service goals.

- TQ1: Demonstrates level of experience and demonstrated knowledge overseeing and coordinating efforts of an artificial intelligence program or innovative information technology program for an organization, including assessing appropriate risk management considerations; and building secure, innovative, and ethical artificial intelligence use cases.
- TQ2: Demonstrates experience overseeing process improvement, strategic planning, project management, and change management techniques for an artificial intelligence program; to include success in advocating for and introducing artificial intelligence and innovation; and enabling roles and technology platforms in an organization.
