GENERAL DUTIES
I.T. Associates perform moderately complex professional work in technology-related disciplines. While areas of specialization vary, typically I.T. Associates work in areas such as development/programming, communications, technical support, or similar functions depending on the needs of the Information Technology area to which they report. Work tasks include resolving complex technology problems and serving as a technical resource. They have considerable latitude for independent initiative and judgment and may have supervisory responsibilities.
I.T. Associates should demonstrate mastery of one or more technology-related disciplines.

CAMPUS SPECIFIC INFORMATION
The Office of Computing and Information Services (CIS) at the City University of New York (CUNY) supports the IT and telecommunications needs of CUNY's 26 colleges. CIS supports enterprise IT and applications, develops new technologies that advance the University's core mission, builds, upgrades, and maintains the University's network operates the University's Data Center and Service Desk. Additionall, CIS manages the processes of safeguarding the University’s IT assets and operates the Cyber Security Operations Center (SOC), develops disaster recovery plans for business continuity, maintains the security of the University’s IT assets, and maintains the CUNYfirst Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) solution that integrates student administration, financial management, and human resources operations across CUNY’s 26 colleges. Lastly, CIS provides strategic and operational IT leadership with respect to the maintenance, enhancement, and expansion of the CUNY network spanning across all CUNY campuses.
The Security Operations Center (SOC) is a centralized unit within CUNY, focused on monitoring, detecting, analyzing, and responding to potential cybersecurity threats and incidents. This team actively oversees CUNY’s network, systems and applications to protect critical data and resources from cyberattacks. The SOC team is also involved in threat intelligence gathering, incident response planning, and security policy enforcement to strengthen the organization's overall cybersecurity posture. Reporting to the SOC Director, the SOC Analyst will be involved in monitoring security alerts, assisting in the response to incidents, and supporting efforts to keep the University’s network secure. The role includes analyzing security patterns, contributing to system maintenance, and supporting the security of CUNY’s technology environment.
- Note: To be considered for appointment to this position, applicants must either hold a permanent Civil Service title as an IT Associate or have filed for the IT Associate promotional or open competitive exam (# 2078 or #2079).
Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:
- Responds to computer security incidents and supports efforts to enhance cybersecurity across colleges.
- Documents incident response actions and prepares reports outlining details of incidents and mitigation efforts.
- Provides support to campus IT teams and assists in security risk assessments to help reduce security vulnerabilities.
- Monitors and analyzes security logs to identify potential security issues or suspicious activity.
- Collaborates with IT management to support the maintenance and monitoring of cybersecurity tools and configurations.
- Develops and maintains documentation for SOC procedures and activities.
- Provides cybersecurity guidance to users and supports incident response efforts.
- Develops queries and tools for identifying unusual network behavior.
- Participates in incident response training and exercises.
Note
Until further notice, this position is eligible for a hybrid work schedule.
Minimum Qualifications
- High School Diploma, G.E.D., or equivalent
- An equivalent of seven years of experience post-high school that can be met by one of the following: seven years of full-time work experience in a computer or technology related position; an Associate's degree plus five years of full-time work experience in a computer or technology-related position; a Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution plus three years of full-time work experience in a computer or technology-related position
- Demonstrated English Language proficiency
- A Motor Vehicle Driver's license, valid in New York State, may be required for some, but not all positions.
This job has three levels. To qualify for Levels 2 and 3, additional qualifications, such as education, experience, or certification relevant to the area of specialization are required.

OTHER QUALIFICATIONS
- General knowledge of system installations, configurations, and deployments in enterprise environments.
- Knowledge of cybersecurity systems design process, technical mitigation, risk management practices, frameworks, and reporting.
- Understanding of network security fundamentals and vulnerability assessment techniques.
- Relevant soft skills to influence a cross-functional team to accomplish goals.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to clearly convey technical information to diverse audiences.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office tools such as Word, Excel, Visio, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Teams.
Compensation
The salary is
$72,209 .
