STARTING PAY: $70,000 per year
SUMMARY
The Public Safety Infrastructure Engineer plays a crucial role in architecting, building, monitoring, and managing the IT infrastructure for the city, with a primary focus on supporting a Regional Crime Center and other public safety duties. This position requires technical expertise to deliver mission-critical infrastructure, ensuring the highest levels of availability, performance, and security. The ideal candidate will have a background in IT, systems, and/or network engineering.
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES
- Maintain, monitor, and support the infrastructure environment and/or facilities of the Regional Crime Center.
- Collaborate with law enforcement personnel to understand specific technical needs and requirements for crime center operations.
- Work closely with crime center staff and engineers to ensure seamless integration of technology solutions to enhance crime prevention and investigation capabilities.
- Configure and manage specialized infrastructure components tailored for crime center activities, such as video surveillance systems, data analytics tools, and evidence management systems.
- May support one or more systems or applications of low to medium complexity (complexity defined by size, technology used, and system feeds and interfaces) with multiple concurrent users, ensuring control, integrity, and accessibility.
- Works with project teams to understand business needs. May work with engineers to understand technical requirements.
- Performs routine maintenance tasks for infrastructure systems such as backups, patch management and hot fixes.
- Monitors system-operating capacity in terms of (e.g., disk space, storage, and CPU utilization) as applicable.
- Installs, configures, and maintains approved system hardware and software components.
- Maintains structured cabling systems, telecom systems, WAN, LAN, Wireless Networks and local Internet, remote access, VPNs, and connectivity protocols.
- Monitors hardware/software activities and resource utilization for capacity planning.
- Identifies problems and optimizes performance, as needed.
- Participates in testing efforts. Provides feedback on test results.
- Monitors ticketing queue and responds to service requests or incidents.
- Provides Level 1-2 production support. Troubleshoots problems by analyzing root causes and evaluating multiple options.
- Recommends procedures and controls for problem resolution or creates temporary solutions until permanent solutions can be implemented.
- Adheres to policies, procedures, and standards
- Documents new or modified functions, modules, and test activities/results according to specified guidelines
- Coordinates installation and maintenance work with outside vendors as needed
- Participates in a 24/7, 365-day on-call rotation schedule, with 30-minute response times.
- Performs other job-related duties as assigned
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
- Proven skills performing basic management and troubleshooting of Microsoft Windows Server, Exchange, VMware and VDI, storage systems, backup and recovery, load balancers, firewalls, and data networking components.
- Solid work experience in the administration and performance tuning of Microsoft Active Directory, VMware administration, network infrastructure, experience with monitoring systems and tools, and a solid knowledge of the OSI network and TCP/IP layers.
- Basic knowledge of current Windows Server, including local user/group management, security policy, task scheduler, event logs, performance monitoring, group policy, PowerShell remoting, file/share permissions.
- Basic knowledge in Active Directory, DNS, OU design and management, AD Site design, Group Policy, AD security, AD certificate services, LDAP, Kerberos, Global Catalog, WINS, DHCP, DFS, FRS, AD troubleshooting, AD recovery and AD related Federated setup.
- Data networking knowledge with bridging, switching, routing, routing protocols, OSI Model, TCP/IP, and Optical Transport.
- Written and verbal communication skills, good judgment, high ethical standards, and a strong work ethic are a must.
- Must be able to interact effectively with employees at all levels of the organization.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
- Must be near or local to Amarillo TX, not remote.
- Associates degree in Computer Science, Information Systems Management, or related field required. Alternatively, an equivalent combination of education and experience, providing the applicant with the needed knowledge, skills and abilities required to succeed in the role will be considered.
- Possess a minimum of 3 years of progressive computer-related experience, including technical support within a multi-system environment.
- Prior experience in a Public Safety or local government environment is preferred.
- Due to the level of access to potentially sensitive information, successful completion of a criminal background check is required. Background check must confirm eligibility for Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) system access and CJIS eligibility must be maintained for the duration of employment.
- Must be able to participate in an after-hours on call rotation and work extended hours when necessary.
- Valid Texas Driver’s License required.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Primary work schedule is Monday – Friday, 8:00 am – 5:00 pm. May be required to work outside of business hours, as necessary. The employee works in a dynamic environment that requires being sensitive to change and responsive to changing goals, priorities, and needs.
