Position: Senior Information Technology Infrastructure Engineer-Per Diem
Definition:
The Senior Infrastructure Engineer role is the advanced working and technical lead level Infrastructure Engineer. This position will regularly provide technical direction to several Infrastructure Engineer positions; architects complex, multiple-platform local area networks (LANs) and wide area networks (WANs); assists with defining network strategy development and deployment options; researches, analyzes, identifies and defines technology trends/products/concepts for Kern Medical Hospital Authority and locations in outlying areas.
Distinguishing Characteristics:
Under direction of the IT Infrastructure Manager, the Senior Infrastructure Engineer is responsible for architecting, maintaining, and troubleshooting our infrastructure needs. The Senior Infrastructure Engineer is a lead position and must have advanced skills in disciplines of technology solutions analysis, planning, and contributing to the business-technology strategy alignment. This role is responsible for maintaining infrastructure and newly acquired technologies, for example: Cisco networking hardware, Palo Alto firewalls, Cisco firewalls, Cisco Meraki networking hardware. This position will also be responsible for assisting with a technical roadmap for the networking team and oversee the workflow involved in maintaining Kern Medicals enterprise network.
Essential Functions:
- Manages and maintains secure access to all supported systems including those that contain protected information (PHI PII, etc.) in accordance with organization polices, regulatory requirements, and industry best practices.
- Designs, implements, monitors and maintains enterprise networks using LAN/WAN inter-networking technology, including network protocols and management systems, using diagnostic tools.
- Manages and monitors network performance as well as identifies and corrects errors and performance flaws
- Provides advanced tier 3 technical support and assistance to IT staff as well as the Infrastructure Engineer positions
- Leads in the development and production of complex documentation for installation, network topology, and troubleshooting of communications hardware or software in accordance with Kern Medical requirements
- Administers the networking security protocol, preventive and posture against threats to the e enterprise network.
- Contributes to disaster recovery and business continuity planning for all IT systems and procedures.
- Evaluates and recommends network hardware and related hardware and software.
- Leads the performance of day-to-day networking tasks to ensure network reliability, availability and serviceability within minimal interruption.
- Applies network patches/updates for security in order to meet regulatory compliance (PCI, HIPAA, SOX).
- Leads discussions with other IT teams to ensure alignment with all related projects and tasks
Other Essential Functions:

Employment Standards:
- BS/BA in Information Technology field and a minimum of 10 years’ experience or equivalent combination of relevant IT experience.
- Advanced experience in LAN/WAN with in depth experience in route and switch.
- Experience with managing Microsoft Cloud technologies (Office 365, Azure, Cloud VPN) required
- Familiarity with network analysis tools such as SolarWinds and Wireshark
- Experience with Linux in an enterprise environment required
- Strong leadership and team mentoring skills
- Advanced experience with Cisco and Avaya Phone systems and Voice Over IP preferred.
- Advanced knowledge of networking and relevant certification (CCNP, CCIE) preferred
Knowledge of:
- Principles and methods of computer networking; Advanced installation, administration and maintenance of enterprise network device
- Current network architectures, technological developments and industry trends in area of expertise
- Principles, practices and methods of WAN/LAN networking including fiber-optic and copper cable systems, data circuits, routers, switches, SDWAN, network operating systems, network appliances, firewalls, network tools, network access control and network security
- Advanced knowledge of Data Center and infrastructure requirements and standards
- Advanced experience in a broad range of networking software and hardware systems and related technologies

Supplemental:
Dependent upon assignment, applicants may be required to pass an extensive background investigation, and be fingerprinted. Disqualification for felony, misdemeanor, and traffic offenses will be assessed on a case-by-case basis.
All Kern Medical employees are designated “Disaster Service Workers” through state and local laws (CA Government Code Sec. 3100-3109 and Ordinance Code Title 2 - Administration, Ch. 2.66 Emergency Services.) As Disaster Service Workers, all county employees are expected to remain at work, or to report for work as soon as practicable following a significant emergency or disaster.
If position responsibilities require driving a personal vehicle, then possession of a current valid California Driver’s License and adherence to the Kern County Hospital Authority Vehicle Use and Driving Standard Policy (ENG-EC-119) is required.
