Systems Engineer

EMPLOYEE STATUS: Exempt (Minimum of 37.5 hours/week)
GENERAL SUMMARY:
IT Generalist implementing new technology, managing servers, network systems, technology security, providing support for IT staff and helpdesk support for end users, and other specific technology areas.
GENERAL POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES (Minimum of 37.5 hours/week):
- Make recommendations regarding technology projects and initiatives
- Plan, test, and implement new systems, including Microsoft Windows and Linux servers.
- Implement and manage cloud-based technology, including Microsoft Azure and Amazon AWS systems.
- Manage a virtualized cluster of hosts and guest servers.
- Provide documentation and training for staff and Technology Services.
- Ensure reliability of backup systems, manage backup libraries, and perform timely file restores at staff request.
- Provide 24/7 emergency support and off-hours maintenance, as part of a rotating on-call schedule and when deemed necessary for additional projects or back-up coverage.
- Maintain and improve network security including antivirus systems and software patching while following principles of design simplicity.
- Provide all levels of helpdesk support for EDI staff, particularly the Microsoft Office suite, Microsoft RDS remote access, web browsers and general Windows desktop support.
SPECIFIC POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES MAY INCLUDE (in order of frequency):
- Manage Windows and Linux servers, including:
- Manage Active Directory authentication services and group policies
- Manage a remote desktop environment including Remote Desktop Services.
- Implement printers and maintain print device hardware.
- Write simple shell scripts
- Perform routine management of user accounts (network, email, and phone).
- Manage email systems, including:
- Manage hosted email in Office 365 environment
- Troubleshoot email delivery
- Manage email archiving processes and restores
- Implement, manage, and troubleshoot technology hardware (desktop PCs, phones, and other devices).
- Manage phone and voicemail system
- Manage network infrastructure, including:
- Manage and troubleshoot network switches and cabling
- Manage DNS and DHCP servers
- Manage web proxy servers
- Manage Cisco routers and firewalls
- Manage 802.11 wireless network
- Identify and solve potential and actual technology security problems, including:
- Protect systems by defining access privileges, control structures, and resources
- Analyze and recognize spam and phishing email
- Recognize problems by identifying abnormalities and reporting violations
- Implement security improvements by assessing current situation, evaluating trends, and anticipating requirements
- Determine security violations and inefficiencies by conducting periodic audits, vulnerability scans, and penetration tests
- Upgrade systems by implementing and maintaining security controls
- Manage converged infrastructure, including:
- Manage virtualization environments
- Implement and manage IIS and Apache web services and common language frameworks
- Manage Microsoft SQL Server
- Manage storage solutions (SAN)
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
3-5 years proven work experience, degree in MIS or Computer Science preferred. Experience with Windows desktop and server environments. Certification in VMware or Azure preferred. Must be able to support MS Office Suite of applications. Must have the ability to communicate clearly and follow up with both technical and non-technical staff. Must have excellent problem-solving skills and a positive helpful demeanor.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Occasional lifting of 20 to 30 lbs, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling.
*This position is located in downtown Milwaukee, WI and a minimum of two days onsite in the office (including Wednesday as an all-staff-in-office day) are a requirement of the role.
