Position Purpose/Summary
The Network Engineering Manager is committed to providing the highest quality of service to the communities, customers, and employees we serve by planning, developing, and maintaining all network operations including routers, transport / access equipment, switches, firewalls, and company applications while providing advice and assistance to support staff.
Primary Duties & Responsibilities
- Effectively support the Data/Video/VoIP/Access/Transport networks and any other equipment deemed necessary, including but not limited to, installation, upgrades, and maintenance.
- Manage vendor relationships and negotiations to ensure the company is receiving the best possible value vs Total Cost of Ownership
- Guiding, mentoring, motivating, training, and developing team members to help them fully understand and successfully accomplish expectations while keeping them sufficiently informed and up to date on all relevant company information.
- Responsible for Network Engineering staff, accountable for quality of work in the department.
- Utilize good management skills and maintain confidentiality when supervising personnel and enforcing company policies and procedures.
- Keep the VP of ISP Operations up to date on all issues in the Network Engineering department.
- Design, analyze, maintain, and implement current customer /company networks and systems with regards to traffic, applications, operating systems, services, technological advancements, customer needs, and sales requests.
- Design, implement, and manage networks across the organization. Experience with Cisco, Ciena, routing protocols (BGP, OSPF, and MPLS), ISP Peering, ARIN, and IP address management is needed. Designing networks: based on the company’s needs and to meet business goals. These networks may be new (built from the ground up) or modifications to existing networks. Network design must consider security and ensure that designs are according to best practices. Implementing networks: Deploy and configure network equipment and test the network for issues. Monitoring networks: Monitor networks for performance and issues. Upgrading networks: Upgrade networks for efficiency. Documenting: Create documentation throughout the design and deployment process. Adapt to existing networks, including reverse engineering legacy systems.
- Present technical information related to specific projects or tasks and communicating schedules and timelines.
- Evaluate new and existing electronic equipment, technologies, and make recommendations for continued modernization of the company’s networks and equipment.
- Manage project planning and coordination as well as compile bid and proposal evaluations for new equipment or services.
- Manage the Network Engineering purchase order process.
- Assist other departments and personnel to help develop and implement new and advanced data networks and telecommunications products, services, and tariffs.
- Assist with preparation of the annual operating and capital budget including but not limited to work force requirements, production schedules, and requirements for new/replacement equipment.
- Stay up to date with all the latest developments in telecommunication technology and all that entails.
- Building and maintaining a good rapport and cooperative relationship with customers and co-workers while taking ownership of responsibilities and being accountable for his/her own actions.
- Must be able and willing to travel, as required.
- Performing all other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

- Ability to use appropriate computer programs (including, but not limited to, Microsoft Office Suite) which includes having proficient computer skills and the ability to adapt and learn as programs and processes change.
- General knowledge of programming procedures
- Knowledge of various pieces of test equipment involved in maintaining a communication network.
- Knowledge of telephone switching network.
- Knowledge of IP Networking, Linux, and Cisco routers and switches
- Ability to work as a team member and exert initiative to work independently to reach a goal.
- Ability to embrace change in the workplace while encouraging others to seek innovative approaches.
- Ability to function effectively as a team player.
- Knowledge of and the ability to comply with Company’s Customer Proprietary Network Information (CPNI) regulations and procedures.
- Ability to work a flexible work schedule, as needed, to best serve our customers.
Qualifications
At a minimum, the Network Engineering Manager must have an associate degree in computer science, or equivalent field of study, 5+ years of related experience, 5+ years of supervisory experience, and a valid driver’s license, or a high school diploma, or equivalent, 10+ years of related experience, and a valid driver's license.
