About the Team
The Technology Team at SWIB is approximately 30 staff over four groups: Business Systems, Database & Development, Information Security, and Infrastructure. These groups support, implement & develop industry leading systems and platforms to support SWIB’s diverse and complex set of investment portfolios and strategies. The Technology Team at SWIB strives to be a trusted advisor and partner to the business that is valued as a critical contributor to SWIB's continued growth and success. We effectively leverage technology to derive the maximum value from it and achieve SWIB's business goals. We keep technology aligned with SWIB's future direction and operate SWIB's technology according to industry standards.
The Infrastructure Team at SWIB is seeking a systems engineer to play a key role in the organization by delivering technology design solutions to meet the needs of the business. The Systems Engineer ensures the stability, integrity, and efficient operation of SWIB’s systems that support our core organization. The Systems Engineer will apply proven technical, problem-solving and analytical skills to maintain and enhance our systems. The Infrastructure Team strives for excellence and expects the applicant to be someone who will work with different areas of the technology team to implement change and will provide a high level of customer service to the business units by delivering the highest quality infrastructure reliability and operational excellence. The environment consists primarily of Windows on VMware, however increasing use of Linux and various cloud services is expected.
Position Overview
Essential activities:
- Provide best practice design and execution of infrastructure, automation, and security to enable highly available, reliable, and supportable information systems. DR/BCP planning a plus.
- Support Information Security to implement security controls across all layers of the technology following best practices to protect the organization including managing and maintaining next-generation firewalls, and cloud security controls.
- Manage and monitor automated server patching to align with Information Security protocol to ensure vulnerability exposure is kept to a minimum.
- Manage the services in Microsoft Office 365 and Enterprise Mobility and Security suite.
- Follow industry best practices and present ideas for improvement to management.
- Lead projects as assigned and provide guidance or training as needed to other members of the infrastructure team and general staff.
- Support the security and operation of various database technologies to ensure database performance, access, consistency, and integrity.
- Participate in on-call rotation to provide exemplary infrastructure and operational support.

The ideal candidate:
- Bachelor’s Degree in business, engineering, technology, or related field of study.
- 7 + years of systems engineering or related experience.
- 5 + years of experience managing servers with Windows OS.
- 3 + years of professional experience managing cloud infrastructure.
- A solid understanding of Networking with experience with Cisco and Fortinet devices.
- Familiarity with backup and recovery software. Exposure to Veeam +
- Familiarity with Linux operating systems or data science tools.
- A good understanding of SQL and databases.
- A solid understanding of various technologies across servers, storage, networks, security, database, cloud services, and .Net applications.
- Experience working in a Windows environment, and with Microsoft Azure, Citrix, PowerShell, Hyper-V, or VMware a plus.
- Experience working with a Hybrid Microsoft domain environment.
- Proven experience with PowerShell scripting. Understanding how to leverage PowerShell to deploy infrastructure as code a plus.
- Appetite for discovering and learning new skills is necessary for this job.

The position requires U.S. work authorization. Pursuant to our Hybrid Remote Work Policy, all staff have the flexibility to work remotely, but are required to have a weekly presence in our offices, the frequency of which is dependent on their distance from office. Staff are not required to reside locally, however we offer relocation reimbursement to the Dane County area per our policy.
