Linux Engineer
Based in Pasadena, CA
OffWorld is a robotics startup working on developing a mobile robotic workforce for heavy industrial jobs on Earth, Moon, asteroids & Mars. OffWorld was founded by an experienced engineering team drawing on decades of tackling formidable engineering challenges at NASA, ESA, NOAA, Maxar Technologies, CERN, Reaction Engines, SAFRAN, Surrey Satellites and Cisco. OffWorld’s first challenge is developing and maturing a modular robotic system for extreme environments on Earth. Our robots will go deeper underground and farthest on Earth than humans can, eliminate the need for humans to work in life-threatening environments in mining, construction, tunneling and other dangerous industries, and dramatically reduce the environmental footprint and cost of operations in key economies on Earth and beyond.
We have designed a modular robotic architecture that focuses on maximizing the commonality and reusability across components for fast deployment and optimization. Our robotic systems combine sensor information, cutting edge classical/machine learning (ML) algorithms and a robotics real-time system platform for control, decision making and execution.
As a Robotics Linux Systems Administrator, you will be responsible for designing, implementing, and maintaining the Linux-based infrastructure that supports our robotics systems. You will collaborate closely with our robotics engineers, software developers, and Dev-ops engineers to ensure seamless integration of hardware and software components. Your primary goal will be to create a stable and efficient Linux environment that enables the smooth operation of our robotic platforms.
In this role, you will have the opportunity to:
- Design, configure, and manage Linux-based systems to support robotics platforms, including deployment, monitoring, and maintenance of robot's onboard computers, workstations, and embedded systems.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to understand their requirements and provide Linux-based solutions for robotics software development, testing, and deployment.
- Implement security measures and best practices to protect Linux systems from unauthorized access, data breaches, and other potential threats.
- Monitor system performance, identify bottlenecks, and optimize Linux configurations to ensure the efficient operation of robotic systems.
- Conduct regular system backups and implement disaster recovery plans to minimize downtime and ensure data integrity.
- Troubleshoot and resolve Linux-related issues, including hardware failures, software errors, and network connectivity problems.
- Integrate third-party software and hardware components into the Linux-based robotics systems.
- Document system configurations, procedures, and troubleshooting steps to ensure knowledge sharing and enable efficient support.
To hit the ground running, you need experience in the following:
- 5+ years of relevant experience, and a bachelor’s degree in computer science, engineering, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
- Proven experience as a Linux Systems Administrator, preferably in a robotics or automation-related environment.
- Strong knowledge of Linux operating systems, including CentOS, Ubuntu, or Debian.
- Proficiency in scripting languages such as Bash, Python, or Perl for automation and system monitoring.
- Experience with configuration management tools (e.g., Puppet, Ansible) and containerization technologies (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes).
- Strong knowledge of network and application protocols and their associated security implications (TCP/IP, UDP, SMTP, FTP, HTTP, TLS, SSH, DNS, SD-WAN, etc.).
- Solid understanding of cybersecurity principles and practices for securing Linux systems.
- Experience in wireless communications including but not limited to WiFi, Cellular and expanding to 900 MHz, Zigbee, Bluetooth, software-defined radios, frequency-hopping.
- Strong knowledge of wireless communication concepts (omni directional/directional antennas, MIMO, Mesh, etc.).
- Knowledge of robotic frameworks, such as ROS (Robot Operating System), is a plus.
- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to troubleshoot complex system issues effectively.
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills to work effectively with cross-functional teams.
- Proactive mindset with a strong sense of ownership and a passion for delivering high-quality solutions. Team player with a hands-on mentality.
In a nutshell, we offer the:
- Opportunity to sink your teeth into cutting edge industrial robotics problems
- Opportunity to contribute to the mission of transforming how we mine on Earth today and how we will one day mine on the Moon, asteroids & Mars
- Opportunity to work with a kind, brilliant and supportive team
- Opportunity to join the OffWorld team if
- You are as crazy-excited about the mission as we are
- You’ve demonstrated you are The Right Stuff
