We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Staff Engineer to lead our robot software efforts within the technical infrastructure division and manage a small team of Engineers (3-4). As a senior technical leader, you will play a pivotal role in setting the technical direction and technically contributing to the core software tooling, frameworks and components that drive the rapid development of the Fox autonomous forklift system.
The mission of the Robot Software team is to design and develop the core robot software infrastructure, tooling, and frameworks that drive the rapid development of the Fox autonomous forklift system, guided by software and testing best practices.
What you’ll do:
- Collaborate across the Fox Robotics organization to understand requirements, lead data driven design, and implement high-quality software for various platforms (robot, CI/CD pipelines, etc.).
- Identify, scope, and manage internal cross-team software projects that improve software developer experience and efficiency at Fox Robotics.
- Manage and mentor a team of 3-4 engineers in software and robot technologies, promoting best practices and fostering a culture that emphasizes software engineering excellence and continuous learning.
- Manage and contribute to team responsibilities that include:
- Middleware infrastructure for the Autonomy system.
- External interface definitions and interactions that include command and control, visualization, and simulation.
- Frameworks and tooling to enable software teams to debug, test, and analyze various autonomy algorithms.
- Creating core software libraries for use across the Fox software organization.
What you’ll need:
- 8+ years of experience developing automated or robotic systems using C++.
- 2+ years of engineering management experience leading a small team and operating as a player/coach
- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to troubleshoot problems across multiple application environments.
- Experience growing and enabling high performance development teams.
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills with the ability to work effectively and efficiently with software developers and other stakeholders.
- Fluent in programming Python and Bash languages.
- Containerization of developer tools and applications using Docker or similar.
- Experience defining and integrating software pipelines in professional CI/CD environments.
Nice to have:
- Experience with Bazel in a large codebase.
- GitLab CI/CD templates and/or components.
- Familiarity with warehouse or logistics robotics applications.
- Experience with standard robotics middleware (eCAL, DDS, etc.).
- ROS2
