Job Description: Network Support Engineer
Location: Colonial Heights, VA-Onsite
The
Network Support Engineer will play a key role in providing Tier 1 network support and assisting in the design, implementation, and maintenance of the campus network infrastructure. The ideal candidate will be highly skilled in network troubleshooting, configurations, and system support. The role requires a mix of creativity and technical expertise to meet the service and support objectives for the Transportation Operations Center.
Key Responsibilities:
- Tier 1 Support: Respond to Tier 1 network support requests, addressing break/fix issues with network resources.
- Network Design: Design extensions and connections to the campus network, including LAN/WAN infrastructure.
- Hardware Deployment: Configure and deploy new and replacement network hardware and communications infrastructure.
- Documentation: Maintain detailed and up-to-date project, architecture, inventory, and maintenance documentation.
- Network Monitoring: Monitor network performance for faults and traffic anomalies and resolve connection issues between users and resources.
- Change Management: Maintain a detailed history of all network changes.
- Field Support: Collaborate with ITS Field Maintenance for communication implementation and troubleshooting.
- Cybersecurity Support: Assist in improving cybersecurity controls and defenses, including threat hunting and mitigation.
- Time and Resource Management: Efficiently manage time and resources to meet project deadlines and support objectives.
Required Skills And Experience:
- Cisco Routing and Switching: 8+ years of experience with Cisco routers and switches, including installation, configuration, and troubleshooting.
- VLAN Management: 5+ years of experience in VLAN management for efficient network segmentation.
- Network Design: 5+ years of experience designing network topologies and integrating new network segments.
- Access Control Lists (ACL): 8+ years of experience in configuring and managing ACLs for network security.
- Subnetting: 10+ years of experience with IP subnetting, calculating subnets, and managing network IPs.
- Routing Protocols (BGP, OSPF, etc.): 8+ years of experience configuring and managing routing protocols.
- Authentication Protocols (Radius, TACACS, etc.): 5+ years of experience with network authentication methods.
- Network Monitoring: 5+ years of experience monitoring network performance, using tools to detect issues early.
- STP, VTP, Multicast: 5+ years of experience with protocols like Spanning Tree Protocol (STP), VLAN Trunking Protocol (VTP), and multicast routing.
Preferred Skills:
- FMC/Firepower: 5+ years of experience with Cisco Firepower Management Center (FMC) and Firepower services (Nice to have).
- Wireless Technologies: 3+ years of experience in wireless technologies such as WLAN (Nice to have).
- DNS/DHCP: 5+ years of experience managing DNS and DHCP services (Highly desired).
- Network Security: 8+ years of experience in securing network infrastructures (Highly desired).
- VPN & Remote Access Technologies: 5+ years of experience configuring and supporting VPNs and remote access technologies.
