Risk Assessment and Control Analyst, Risk – Position
Sunnova Energy is searching for a Risk Assessment and Control, Risk to assess and analyze the comprehensive risk portfolio of our energy company, focusing on electricity credit trading markets, as well as operational and regulatory risks inherent in the energy sector. Reporting to the Senior Director of Risk, this role will seek to measure, analyze
and monitor the P&L, exposure and assess risk and compliance of commercial activities. The Risk Assessment and Control Analyst, Risk will play a key role in the Mid-Office function.
Responsibilities
- Energy Market Risk
- Responsible for leading the risk management analysis, monitoring, and reporting for trading activities including open positions, valuation controls, MTM valuation, including daily explanations on applicable metrics and limits
- Coordinate and review deal and price in commercial systems by performing deal check, price validation, curve update, and data reconciliation
- Monitor timely deal capture, internal trading limits, and risk policy requirements to ensure the representativeness and integrity of transactions in the trading system
- Provide critical thinking around risk reporting processes, quantification, and analysis of commodity exposure and forward price movements for Sunnova’s trading activities
- Ensure adherence to regulatory requirements and compliance standards in risk management practices. This involves staying updated on relevant regulations and integrating them into risk analysis processes
- Maintain, enhance, and review risk models
- Test new risk calculations, evaluate model assumptions against fundamentals, and communicate suggested modeling/valuation enhancements to achieve better valuation and risk quantification
- Communicate effectively with Commercial, Operations, back office and Finance team on inputs and assumptions
- Work closely with Commercial resources to quantify and explain the sources of risk in their portfolios
- Contribute to the reporting of Commercial Results/ Position to Senior management
- Work closely with Back Office, Finance, Credit, Legal & Compliance, to ensure best control practices, operational efficiency and policy/limit compliance
- Operational Risk
- Identify and quantify various risks across the energy sector, including market, operational, regulatory, and financial risks that may impact the Company (e.g., pricing, APRs, dealer fees, advance rates, supply chain, etc.)
- Provide support of ad-hoc and/or secondary review of material or key balance sheet and income statement metrics and includes budget-to-actual variance assessments as applicable
Minimum Requirements
- A bachelor's degree, preferably with an emphasis in accounting, finance, economics, mathematics or a related field
- 7+ years of highly specialized subject matter experience
- 5+ years’ experience in energy and/or financial risk management positions
- In-depth understanding and experience calculating and analyzing value-at-risk and mark-to-market methodologies, assumptions, and results
- Experience interfacing and communicating with senior level management
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s degree in accounting, finance, economics, or mathematics
- Previous experience in energy, and in particular, residential solar
- Hedge accounting, fair value reporting knowledge and experience (e.g., documentation, hedge effectiveness measurement, etc.)
- Professional risk management certifications (e.g., FRM, PRM)
- CFA or other advanced, professional, business-centric certifications
