PRIMARY PURPOSE: The Data Architect plays a crucial role in designing, developing, and maintaining the organization’s business data architecture, ensuring data quality, availability, and security. This individual will collaborate with business stakeholders, developers, and other technical and business teams to understand data needs and translate them into robust and scalable data solutions.
The Data Architect role's primary focus will be the understanding, enhancement, and ongoing evolution of the business data warehouse in SQL Server. This will involve close collaboration with other IS and Analytics data professionals to integrate new data sources and ensure the continuous fulfillment of the organization’s analytical, reporting and operational requirements.
Responsibilities & Duties
Data Architecture & Development
- Design, develop, and implement data warehouse and data mart solutions, including schema design, data loading, and query optimization.
- Write and optimize complex SQL queries for data extraction, transformation, and analysis.
- Design and implement data integration solutions, including ETL (Extract, Transform, Load) processes using appropriate tools and techniques
- Architect data pipelines leveraging API integrations, file-based data feeds, ODBC connections etc.
- Collaborate with business stakeholders, developers, and other technical teams to understand data needs and translate them into technical solutions
- Other duties as assigned
Data Modeling & Governance
- Develop and maintain a comprehensive enterprise data architecture framework that serves as a blueprint for managing organizational data assets.
- Create and manage conceptual and logical data models to represent data entities, structures, and relationships.
- Develop and maintain physical data models optimized for the performance and characteristics of target systems, including relational databases (e.g., SQL Server), NoSQL databases, data warehouses, and data lakes.
- Design and maintain data flow diagrams to visualize the movement and transformation of data across systems.
- Develop, manage, and help maintain a central data dictionary to ensure consistent understanding and definition of data elements.
- Establish and enforce data governance policies and procedures, including data quality rules, data security standards, and data access controls
- Contribute to the development of the overall data strategy for the organization, aligning data architecture with business goals and objectives
Technology Advancement & Optimization
- Remain current with the latest trends, technologies, and advancements in data architecture and data management, including developments in artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning, and explore their potential application within the organization.
- Conduct proof-of-concept and pilot projects to assess the feasibility and benefits of new technologies.
- Work with other data professionals on monitoring system performance metrics and proactively identifying areas for optimization of data storage and retrieval processes
Technical Expertise & Knowledge Sharing
- Communicate data architecture concepts and solutions effectively to both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Provide guidance, mentorship, and knowledge sharing to other data professionals within the organization to promote a data-driven culture.
- Create and help maintain comprehensive documentation for all aspects of data architecture, including data models, data integration processes, and architectural decisions.
Education & Experience Requirements
- A four-year university or college degree is required, preferably in the field of Computer Science or Information Systems.
- Minimum 5-10 years of experience in data architecture, data modeling, and data integration focused role
- Robust understanding of data architecture principles, best practices, and patterns
- Proficiency in data modeling tools and techniques
- Extensive experience with various database technologies, including relational databases (SQL Server preferred) and data warehouses
- Experience with ETL tools and techniques
- Extensive experience (5+ years) with SQL (tsql preferred, GoogleSQL a plus) including DDL (stored procedures, functions etc.)
- Experience with common programming languages including .Net (c#), python
- Experience with data governance frameworks and tools is a plus
- Experience with cloud-based data platforms (GCP preferred) is a plus
- Experience with big data technologies (e.g. Databricks) is a plus
- Experience with data visualization tools (Tableau preferred) is a plus
- Experience leveraging AI models in daily tasks, including programming (e.g., ChatGPT, Gemini, GitHub Copilot).
