Compass Intervention Center has been providing psychiatric services in Memphis, Tennessee for 29-years. Compass Intervention Center is a 108-bed, free-standing facility that treats children and teens, ages 12 to 17 for Residential and Acute patients; ages 10 to 17 for our Outpatient Programs struggling with a psychiatric, substance abuse or dual diagnosis disorder. It is the only TRICARE®-certified residential treatment facility in Memphis, Tennessee.
We are dedicated to providing age-specific programs to address the needs of children, preteens and teens with a wide variety of psychiatric illnesses, behavioral problems and substance abuse issues.
Our treatment programs focus on youth and families struggling with emotional, behavioral, and chemical dependency issues. We provide specialized, individual treatment to help every patient achieve a positive outcome and improve relationships.

Job Summary
As the Risk Manager the main responsibility is the oversight of the UHS Risk Management TERM Program. The Risk Manager reports directly to the Chief Executive Officer with dotted line reporting to the Corporate Risk Manager. The Risk Manager meets personally with the Chief Executive Officer on a periodic basis. Detailed responsibilities are outlined below.
Essential Job Functions
Responsibility I: Risk Identification and Evaluation
- Ensures appropriate and timely reporting of occurrences by maintaining Incident Reporting system and enters incidents into the MIDAS Database.
- Collects and screens all reports.
- Analyzes and trends data
- Identifies actual and potential risk situations and facilitates the determination of causative factors
- Refers occurrences for follow‑up to appropriate department or medical committee; ensures that all Level III/IV events are referred to the Peer Review Committee
- Receives immediate and concurrent reporting of adverse patient outcomes identified by the PI process
- Performs risk surveys and inspects patient care areas in concert with hospital's safety (EOC) program committee objectives
- Reviews reports on facility and equipment to assess loss potential
- Receives and investigates reports of product problem to determine appropriate response and establish record keeping responsibilities. In the event of patient injury, established direction from Corporate Risk Management in the appropriate action for defense strategy
- Receives information (verbally or formally) from facility staff regarding patient events which may lead to a claim.
Responsibility II: Risk Reduction
- Networks with department managers to implement system changes aimed at optimally reducing or eliminating causative factors.
- Interfaces with Performance Improvement Director specific to provision of patient care, and assessment of quality data
- Networks with medical staff to ensure active involvement and participation in risk identification, risk analysis and risk reduction/loss prevention problem solving and program development designed to benefit the clinical aspects of patient care and safety
- Interfaces with the Patient Advocate specific to patient complaints and assesses/recommends action, on those, which may be a source of potential litigation.
- In conjunction with hospital administration recommends actions when possible to resolve with patient and/or family any grievances against hospital perceived as potential liability claims.
- Refers policies that present particular risk in relation to previously identified problems to Corporate Risk Management
- Identifies particular practices having legal connotations to target planning of preventive and corrective measures
- Assesses liability and probability of legal action
- Is available to resolve treatment issues, including patient refusal of treatment, consent issues, HIPPA violations, AMA's, etc. under direct supervision of Administrator, Corporate Legal Counsel, and Corporate Risk Management
Responsibility III: Contract preparation
Assists, as needed with contract review. Clinical contracts should contain the following:
Indemnity - Hold harmless/Indemnification language is addressed in contracts i.e. Contractor agrees to indemnify/hold harmless against loss
Adequate Insurance Coverage
Safety Provisions
Compliance with facility policy and procedure
Copies of certificate of insurance listing the liability policy in force and amount of coverage are on file and current
Organization is identified as an additional named insured and/or certificate holder, wherever possible/appropriate
Responsibility IV: Claims Management
- Notifies the Corporate Risk Manager of all Level III and IV events and completes a Adverse Event Report (AER) for all Level III/IV events in Enterprise and submits the PCR for review by the Corporate Risk Manger
- Assists the Corporate Risk Management as needed to intervene, document and assist in the investigation of all claims.
- Coordinates investigation of claims within the facility:
- Directs in‑house claims investigation.
- Preserves all pertinent information (medical record, x-rays, equipment, lab/pathology specimens, relevant reports/policies and procedures)
- Facilitates early reporting
- Establishes early control of situation
- Assists in obtaining materials for attorneys
- Maintains all legal case files and ensures maximum protection and discoverability
- Upon receipt of any letters of representation, notices of suit, summons and complaints or official communication from plaintiff’s counsel or from patients acting as their own counsel, notifies the corporate risk manager and corporate claims manager
- Coordinates with and assists attorneys as they interface with the facility and employees and serves as the facility representative in assisting attorney’s in investigation of claims and preparation of defense.
- Advises Business Office of actions consistent with directions from Corporate Office for unpaid accounts involved in litigation
Responsibility V: Loss Control and Prevention
- Participates in facility Environmental Safety Rounds for all patient care areas, including outdoor use/grounds areas of facility at least monthly and off site patient use locations at a minimum of once per quarter
- Develops a report of actual/potential risks identified in the environment of care and reports through the Environment of Care Committee (EOC)
- Develops a Pro-Active Environment Risk Assessment (PERA) and reviewed at EOC/Safety Committee and updated as needed
- In collaboration with Director of Plant Operations (DPO), ensures that a process is in place to notify Corporate Insurance in the event of Building/property damages and loss e.g. broken pipes, fire/smoke and/or water sprinkler damage/water intrusion as well as, Hospital-owned vehicle damage
- In collaboration with DPO, ensures that the facility conducts annual Safety/Security drills to test/evaluate all aspects of response to pertinent security issues (i.e. patient abduction, bomb threat and/or weapons/violence in the work place)
- In collaboration with nursing, ensures that medical emergency equipment is appropriate and in good working order and that emergency medical drills are conducted as outlined in UHS Risk Management Program as it relates to the facility level of care.

Responsibility VII: Employee/Physician Education:
- Facilitates, develops, and provides educational programs to insure all employees and medical staff are aware of the Risk Management concept and its relation to their specific duties/job role in identifying and reducing liability exposures to include but is not limited to:
- Participation in new employee orientation and annual updates as outlined in required
- Participation in Medical/LIP staff orientation and annual updates as outlined in required
- Plans, presents, facilitates and/or recommends risk management education to all departments, as necessary
- Stays current in industry trends and shares current literature and articles of relevance with all appropriate departments
- Suggests, plans, facilitates, and presents information and suggests topics related to Risk Management to committees or hospital departments, as necessary, based on occurrences or claim patterns
- Participates through education in department meetings as appropriate
Responsibility VIII: Reporting, Report Preparation and Submission
- Provides aggregate analysis of risk data and trend analysis of incidents to:
- Administration

- Medical Staff Committees

- Directly reports to Administration those incidents with claims potential.
- Reports to Corporate RM any serious risk event involving actual or potential injury to patients and visitors; enters AER’s (Level III/IV incidents) into Enterprise Database within 8 business days of the incident.
- Enters critical events into the BH Serious Event Notification System (SENS) and provides 45-day follow-up to track the outcomes of events
Responsibility IX: Medical Staff
- Advises the Medical Director and Medical Executive Committee as needed
- Serves as a resource to the Medical Staff Credentialing Process and the Credentials Committee as needed. Data from physician peer review, OPPE/FPPE, and risk management activities are utilized in the decision making process of granting privileges to and reappointment of medical and allied health staff.
- Develops, coordinates, presents/facilitates educational programs specific to medical staff concerns.
- Advises physicians on issues of interest or concern including Informed Consent process; Documentation and communication; Accountability; Response to patient/family complaints; and internal problem solving
- Provides methods to communicate patient events to the Risk Manager that may result in a claim
- Ensures that the Medical Staff Bylaws and Rules and Regulations incorporate TERM elements and are reviewed annually.
Responsibility X: Professional Grown and Development

Qualifications
Education: Graduate of an accredited school of nursing or other mental health related program.
Experience: Clinical experience in a psychiatric in‑patient facility with knowledge of high- risk areas preferred. Two years Risk Management experience.
Certification: Licensed Nurse or Bachelor degree in Mental Health/Social Work.
Skills: Knowledge of hospital operations, risk identification, assessment and reduction and claims management; excellent communication skills, both written and oral.
Physical Requirements: Ability to stoop, kneel, sit, stand, crouch, reach, grasp, walk, push, pull, lift, moving about in work area and throughout hospital to accomplish tasks. Perform repetitive motions with wrists, hand, and fingers. Ability to express and exchange ideas via spoken word, conveying information to others in an audible, accurate, and on occasion, quick manner. Ability to perceive the nature of sounds with or without correction; perceive detailed information through oral communication and to make fine discriminations in sound.
Must be able to concentrate on work amid distractions such as noise, conversations, and foot traffic; must be able to consistently meet deadlines regardless of case load; must be flexible in work hours in order to meet patient and organization operating needs. Must maintain self-control in volatile or hostile situations such as when verbally or physically confronted. Computer skills with advanced knowledge in Word, Power Point, and Excel programs.
