About Comun
Comun’s mission is to help Hispanic immigrants turn their hard work into upwards mobility — starting with financial services that enable the transition from cash to the digital economy.
We offer checking accounts that immigrants can open using more than 100+ IDs from Latin America; more than 90K locations across the country to deposit cash; international transfers at market leading rates to 17 countries in Latin America; and 24/7 bilingual customer support with <5 min SLA across email, chat and phone.
A year ago we launched our own banking infrastructure, resulting in 100x revenue growth and 4x growth of ARPU. We currently process over $1.5B in transaction volume on a yearly basis, and crossed $100M in annualized international transfers just six months after launching them.
We’ve raised $30M from Redpoint, Costanoa Ventures, and South Park Commons, among others. Most of our team comes from leading fintech companies like Brex and Nubank.
We believe immigrants are the ultimate entrepreneurs, carrying a relentless work ethic in search of a better future for their families. Comun exists to serve them throughout their journey.

About the Role
As a backend engineer, you’ll be responsible for extending our systems to support additional banking features, increases in usage volume, and the needs of our non-technical company functions.
You’ll maintain our core offering — a deposit account and debit card powered through our Banking as a Service partner, while designing our architecture to bundle additional financial services into a personalized product experience. We’ve adopted a lightweight microservice infrastructure that allows us to move quickly, but that can flex on robustness to ensure scalability as our engineering team grows.
What you’ll do
Collaborate with our product, design, and front end functions to build new financial offerings that advance the company mission.
Work with back end peers to establish new processes, software patterns, and tools that expedite our development process.
Maintain a testing and observability stack that keeps our system stable and proactively alerts us of internal or third party users.
Work with leadership to plan our engineering execution across different time horizons.
You are
Opinionated on software engineering best practices, at a code and developer productivity level.
Product-minded and passionate about delivering delightful experiences to customers.
Experienced building backend systems that grow in complexity over time.
A critical thinker capable of making tradeoffs in a fast paced environment.
A great communicator and collaborator, capable of creating and running cross-functional processes.
Requirements
4+ years of experience in software engineering
2+ years of experience using Python and Postgres
Bonus: Experience with GraphQL, DevOps (Terraform, AWS, Kubernetes), and pub/sub models (Kafka)
We value domain experts that are obsessed with their craft and push the quality bar beyond reach. We also like generalists that are self-driven and entrepreneurial, who can make product decisions and own operational processes.
Team
We are a team of 30 based out of New York, coming from industry-leading companies like Brex, Nubank, Cruise, and Verkada. Over half of us are immigrants, and have experienced the problems we’re solving first hand. We value customer focus, high ambition, principled decision-making, and deep trust.
