About our team/Mō te tīma
The Office of Risk, Assurance, and Compliance ensures the University operates with integrity and foresight.
As the guardian of the University’s risk, assurance, and compliance functions, the Office safeguards our people, operations, and reputation, while supporting excellence across academic, research, and administrative activities, including major projects, and commercial enterprises.
The Office plays a vital role in coordinating the University’s business continuity planning and response to emergencies and major incidents, ensuring a swift and effective approach to managing critical situations.
The role/Te mahi
This is a critical role, providing specialist guidance to the Vice-Chancellor, the Senior Leadership Team, and the Audit and Risk Committee of the University Council.
We are seeking an experienced and highly motivated professional to lead the Office of Risk, Assurance, and Compliance. Reporting directly to the Chief Operating Officer and a member of the Operations Senior Leadership Team, this is a rare opportunity for a risk, assurance and compliance professional to take on a leadership role within a large and complex environment and New Zealand’s first University.
This role has primary responsibility for risk management, internal audit, compliance management, emergency and business continuity management and fraud and corruption prevention.
Your skills and experience/Kā pūkeka me kā wheako
You will be an accomplished leader with a broad range of expertise and professional leadership across risk and compliance management. You will have the ability to lead through influence and deal with highly sensitive information.
As a senior member of our team, you will have the skills in championing a vision, achieving organisational wide continuous improvement and successfully setting strategic directions within a high-profile organisation.
To be successful in this role you will need to have:
• Very strong internal audit and assurance skills.
• Expertise and experience with compliance management within a large and complex environment.
• Audit and Risk Committee reporting experience.
• Proven experience in strategic risk management.
• Policy and Framework development and implementation.
• An understanding of business continuity and emergency management.
• Ability to leverage technology to drive innovation and support strategic goals.
• Exceptional stakeholder engagement skills at all levels of an organisation.
An understanding of the tertiary education environment would be advantageous but is not essential.

This is a permanent, full-time position.
The role is based on our main campus in Dunedin, on the southeast coast of New Zealand’s South Island. While the preference is for the successful appointee to reside in Dunedin, applications from candidates seeking a hybrid arrangement will also be considered.
