With such notable accomplishments as its first place-winning solar cars and first-ever fuel cell plane, Cal State Los Angeles has made a scientific name for itself in the crowded Southern California university landscape. The university has more than 20,000 students working toward undergraduate and graduate degrees and vocational certificate programs through six colleges. Areas of study include arts and letters; business and economics; education; engineering, computer science, and technology; health and human services; and natural and social sciences. Cal State LA was founded in 1947 as the Los Angeles State College; it is part of the California State University system, which includes more than 20 campuses.
